Moving Halton, the GTA and Canada since 1975

Most people don’t find out that July 1st is Ontario’s busiest moving day until they’re calling around in late June and hearing the same answer everywhere: we’re fully booked.

It catches people off guard every year. Canada Day feels like a holiday, not a logistical obstacle. But if your lease ends June 30th, you’re joining one of the largest concentrations of move-ins and move-outs in the province. Here’s why it happens and what to do about it right now.

Why So Many Ontario Leases Turn Over on July 1st

Most residential leases in Ontario run from the first of the month, and July 1st has become the natural convergence point for that turnover. Several groups land there for different reasons. Students bridge from a spring lease to a fall one. Young professionals starting jobs in the summer time their move to coincide. Families trying to settle before August target the same window. Real estate closings pile on because July 1st is a clean calendar date that buyers and sellers find easy to coordinate around. None of them are planning around each other. They’re all just responding to the same calendar.

The result is a single day that sees more moving activity than almost any other date on the Ontario calendar.

What That Means for Availability

Moving companies in Halton and Peel start filling their July 1st slots in May. By mid-June, the trucks and crews best suited to larger jobs are often already committed. What’s left tends to be limited availability on dates immediately around the holiday.

Condo and apartment buildings add another layer. Most buildings restrict elevator access for moves and require residents to book a time slot in advance. Popular buildings fill those slots weeks out. If you’re moving into or out of a condo in Milton, Mississauga, or Oakville, securing your elevator booking is not a step to leave for the week before.

Parking needs attention too. Municipalities including Mississauga require advance notice for temporary parking suspensions when a moving truck needs to sit in front of a house. Lead times vary, but a week’s notice is the minimum in most cases.

Your June Checklist

If your move is on or around July 1st, this is the order of operations:

  • Book your movers first. If you haven’t called yet, do it today. Mid-June is getting tight. Late June is a gamble.
  • Book elevator access. If either your current or new address is in a condo or apartment building, contact building management immediately. Some buildings only offer one or two move-in windows per day.
  • Arrange parking at both ends. Check with your municipality about temporary parking suspensions for the truck. In Mississauga, this goes through the city’s online portal. In Oakville, contact the municipality directly.
  • Notify utilities now. Electricity, gas, and internet providers often need two weeks of lead time for a service transfer or new connection. July 1st is a holiday, which means processing delays at providers who work on business-day timelines.
  • Start packing non-essentials. Three weeks out is the right time to start boxing up anything you won’t need before the move.

Our moving checklist walks through the full timeline in detail if you want a complete picture.

Why a Mid-Week or Off-Peak Move Saves You Stress

If your lease gives you any flexibility, aim for a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in the last week of June. Movers have more availability. Buildings have open elevator slots. Parking is easier to arrange. You get into your new home a few days early and avoid the July 1st foot traffic entirely.

An early morning start helps on any date. A 7:30 or 8:00 am start beats the afternoon heat in late June, and if you’re moving into a building with a capped move window, starting early gives you the most buffer. Our local movers in Milton and Mississauga work with you on timing to avoid the pinch points.

How We Handle the Summer Rush

Bronte Movers has been running crews through Ontario summers since 1975. We know what the July 1st calendar looks like and we schedule conservatively. We don’t overbook. When you’re confirmed with us, your time is held.

July 1st weekend fills fast. If you’re targeting that date and haven’t called, now is the time. If you’ve already missed the window and need last-minute help, give us a call anyway, and we can always check availability!

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I book movers for a July 1st move? Six to eight weeks out is ideal. In practical terms for 2026, that means right now. Good availability for July 1st weekend starts thinning in late May and is largely gone by mid-June for the most in-demand time slots.

What if I’ve already left it too late? Call anyway. Cancellations happen, and we keep some capacity for short-notice moves. You may have fewer time slot options, but check before you assume nothing is available.

Does moving on Canada Day cost more? We don’t charge a holiday premium for July 1st. You should ask any company you’re comparing us against, because some do.

My building requires an elevator booking. What if I can’t get one on July 1st? Talk to building management about the days immediately before and after. Many buildings have open slots on June 28th or 29th that go unclaimed because residents are focused on the 1st. A June 30th move with a one-night handoff in the new place is often smoother than fighting for an elevator slot on the holiday itself.

Book Before the Rush Does

July 1st comes the same time every year and catches the same number of people off guard. A quick call now is all it takes to make sure you’re not one of them.
